Police in Zambia at Kalumbila have arrested 259 suspects in connection with the brutal mob killing of Eneless Hellen Kamutumbe, which shocked the nation last week.

Northwestern Province Commanding Officer Brighton Siwale confirmed the development, revealing that 96 of those arrested are women, while 163 are men.

Kamutumbe, 46, was attacked and killed by a mob after being falsely accused of making a man’s private parts disappear an allegation that sparked outrage and renewed concern over mob justice and harmful superstitious beliefs.

Police say the suspects are facing a wide range of charges, including:

  • Murder
  • Assault on police officers
  • Malicious damage to property
  • Riotous behavior

During the incident, officers who attempted to rescue Kamutumbe were overpowered by the violent crowd, with some sustaining injuries and a police vehicle damaged.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing as they work to ensure justice is served in one of the most disturbing mob attacks recorded in the district.
