Fuel Prices Surge Again in Malawi as MERA Announces Up to 35% Increase

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced a sharp increase in fuel prices effective April 1, 2026, impacting petrol, diesel, and kerosene nationwide.
In a statement released at midnight and signed by board chairperson Lukas Kondowe, petrol has risen from K4,965 to K6,672 per litre, while diesel has increased from K4,945 to K6,687 per litre. Kerosene is now selling at K5,824 per litre.
MERA says the price adjustments have been driven by global supply instability, inflationary pressures, rising international demand, and ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which continue to disrupt fuel supply chains.
The authority maintains that the hike is necessary to sustain fuel availability and stabilize the domestic market.
This latest increase follows another hike of over 40 percent in January 2026, further intensifying pressure on transport costs and the prices of essential goods across the country.
