Police in Mwanza District have arrested two employees of a state hospital for allegedly being involved in the death of a baby who died at birth after they demanded a bribe of K100,000.
According to police spokesperson Hope Kasakula, the suspects have been identified as Hary Moyo, 41, and Agness Phaka, 56. The two are alleged to have asked an expectant mother to pay money in order to receive medical assistance.
Reports indicate that the woman’s treatment was delayed after she failed to immediately pay the requested amount, which is suspected to have contributed to the death of her baby.
The incident comes as Health Cabinet Secretary Madalitso Baloyi visited the hospital yesterday, where he met with hospital officials and other stakeholders as part of ongoing investigations into the matter.
