17 Burundians Arrested in Chitipa for Illegal Entry

Police in Chitipa have arrested 17 Burundian nationals for allegedly entering Malawi illegally.
According to Chitipa Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Mathews Mfune, the arrests took place on Monday, April 6, 2026, following a tip-off from members of the public.
Mfune explained that police received information that a group of foreign nationals was heading into the district in search of accommodation. Acting on the intelligence, detectives launched a follow-up operation.
The officers tracked the group to a rest house where they had planned to spend the night. Police then carried out an ambush, leading to the arrest of all 17 individuals.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
