Public Outcry Over Fuel Price Hike as Government Considers Relief Measures

Members of the public and various organizations in Malawi have expressed concern following the recent increase in fuel prices by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), a move that has led to higher transportation and commodity costs.

The development has significantly affected the cost of living, with many Malawians struggling to cope with rising expenses.

Government spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba has acknowledged the hardships being faced by citizens, stating that the fuel price adjustment was difficult to avoid due to global increases in fuel costs. He attributed the situation to ongoing international conflicts that have disrupted fuel supply and pricing.

Namalomba said the government is exploring several measures to ease the burden on citizens. These include the possibility of increasing salaries for civil servants, suspending certain taxes, and strengthening social support programs and community development initiatives.

Meanwhile, Public Affairs Committee (PAC) spokesperson Bishop Gilford Matonga welcomed the proposed interventions but emphasized that such measures should have been implemented before the fuel price hike.

On his part, National Advocacy Platform (NAP) chairperson Benedicto Kondowe said the government’s response shows it is listening to citizens’ concerns. However, he stressed the need for swift action to effectively address the economic challenges people are facing.
