Man Found Hanging in Police Cell at Chibvala Unit

A 21-year-old man, Monjeza Lekeni, has died while in police custody at Chibvala Police Unit in Dowa District after allegedly taking his own life.
According to Ester Mkwanda, police spokesperson for the Eastern Region, the incident occurred in the early hours of today.
Mkwanda said Lekeni had been arrested on suspicion of stealing a bicycle and was alone in the cell at the time of the incident. He is reported to have used his trousers to hang himself from the roof.
A postmortem conducted at a hospital has confirmed that the cause of death was suicide.
Lekeni hailed from Katchere Village under Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa District.
