The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has urged the government to urgently address Malawi’s fuel and foreign exchange shortages, warning that the situation is affecting citizens nationwide.
In a statement, CDEDI said remarks by Information Minister Shadric Namalomba confirming depleted fuel reserves reflect reality but have also triggered panic and long queues at filling stations.
The group has challenged Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha to present a clear and actionable plan to resolve the forex crisis.
CDEDI further warned that failure to act could raise concerns about unfulfilled promises by the Democratic Progressive Party.
However, the organisation commended artisan miners for helping ease pressure through gold sales and urged the government to adopt long-term measures, including formalising small-scale mining and reviewing fuel taxes.
