Police in Mzuzu have arrested three men suspected of stealing construction materials from St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Zolozolo.
Mzuzu Police Deputy Spokesperson, Edson Chipeni, identified the suspects as Robert Banda (22), Aubrey Saka (22), and Yohane Mkumbwa (24).
According to Chipeni, the church is currently constructing a hostel, although the project has been temporarily halted due to various challenges. During a routine inspection earlier this week, church officials discovered that 75 construction items, valued at approximately K1.8 million, had been stolen from the site.
Following a tip-off from members of the public, police launched an investigation which led to the arrest of the three suspects. Chipeni said the suspects have since confessed to the crime.
Police also managed to recover 16 tools along with a machine believed to have been used to cut the stolen materials.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to theft.
