A four-year-old boy, Collins Gama, has died after drowning in Lake Malawi at Cape Maclear in Mangochi District.

The deceased was a Standard 1 pupil at Chisintu Independent Primary School. According to reports obtained by TWR, Collins was returning home from school with his friends on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

The children were walking along a coastal path that had been flooded by lake water. While attempting to cross, Collins accidentally stepped into a deep section and drowned, while his friends managed to swim to safety.

Fishermen who witnessed the incident rushed to rescue the boy and took him to Gordon Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A medical report indicated that the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

Collins hailed from Dedza, where he lived with his parents.

Meanwhile, Monkey Bay Police spokesperson Kondwani James has advised parents to ensure their children’s safety during their daily journeys to and from school to help prevent similar accidents.
