The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe has adjourned the trial involving former Trade and Industry Minister Vitumbiko Mumba and Jessie Kabwila to June 1, 2026.
The two, alongside Khwima Mchizi, are facing charges of publishing false information likely to disrupt national security.
According to Mchizi, the adjournment followed a request by the prosecution, which informed the court that its witnesses were not yet ready to testify. He said he did not object to the postponement, maintaining that the defence remains prepared to proceed with the case at any time.
“I am always ready to proceed with the matter,” Mchizi told the court.
Earlier in the proceedings, Senior Resident Magistrate Bracious Kondowe dismissed an application by the defence seeking to have the case thrown out, ruling that the matter should proceed to full trial.
The case has drawn public attention due to the prominence of the accused and the nature of the charges, which relate to the alleged publication of information deemed harmful to national security.
The matter is expected to resume on June 1, when the prosecution is anticipated to present its witnesses.
