Police in Karonga have arrested two men for allegedly selling liquid fuel without a valid licence, in a move authorities say is part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal fuel trading in the district.

Karonga Police Station Public Relations Officer, Rose Chipyola, confirmed the arrests and identified the suspects as Tiwonge Kalinga, 42, from Peter Mwangalaba Village under Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga, and Benard Kalagho, 29, from Mwalupanga Village under Traditional Authority Mwaulambia in neighbouring Chitipa District.

According to Chipyola, the two were found in possession of 73 litres of petrol, which they were reportedly selling illegally. The fuel has since been confiscated by the police.

In a related development, police at the Songwe border intercepted an additional 34 litres of petrol. The suspected owners fled the scene upon noticing law enforcement officers, abandoning the fuel, which was subsequently seized.

Police have since launched a manhunt to locate and apprehend the individuals who escaped.

Authorities have reiterated their warning against engaging in illegal fuel trade, emphasizing that such activities not only violate the law but also pose safety risks to the public.

The suspects currently in custody are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to illegal possession and sale of petroleum products.
