Police in Machinga District have impounded a lorry after it was discovered transporting suspected stolen railway materials belonging to Central East African Railways (Cear).

According to Liwonde Police Station spokesperson Ngwashape Nsume, the incident occurred on Monday at Nsanama Village under Traditional Authority Nsanama. Police officers from Mgodi Police Unit acted swiftly on a tip-off that a vehicle was ferrying railway metals hidden under sand near Mwalasi River.

“Officers rushed to the scene but found that the suspects had fled, abandoning the truck,” Nsume said.

The lorry, registration number MZ 4067, was found loaded with 17 pieces of railway metal, each measuring approximately six metres in length. Authorities suspect the materials were stolen from Cear infrastructure.

Police have since seized both the vehicle and the railway metals. Meanwhile, a manhunt has been launched for the driver and another suspect identified as Mcsame Logani, a resident of Wotchi Village in the area.

Investigations are ongoing as police intensify efforts to track down the suspects and curb theft of critical infrastructure.
