Elderly Man Found Dead in Suspected Suicide in Liwonde

A 65-year-old man from Namanolo Village under Traditional Authority Amidu in Balaka District has died in what police suspect to be a case of suicide.

The deceased, identified as John Juwao, was found dead in a bush near his home at Mawira in Liwonde Township after going missing earlier in the day.

According to his wife, Patuma Allie, Juwao left home around 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday to collect firewood but failed to return. Concerned by his prolonged absence, family members attempted to reach him on his mobile phone without success. The matter was subsequently reported to Liwonde Police Station.

A search was later conducted, leading to the discovery of his body in a nearby bush.

Liwonde Police Station Public Relations Officer, Ngwashape Nsume, confirmed the incident and said a postmortem examination determined the cause of death to be strangulation.

Police have since classified the case as a suspected suicide. Investigations are ongoing.
