Four people have died while several others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident that occurred in the early hours of today at Tenenthe along the Chitipa-Karonga M26 Road in Karonga District.

According to Karonga Police spokesperson Rose Chipyola, the deceased have been identified as Moses Ngosi (31) from Mwawembe Village, Traditional Authority Kyungu, Innocent Sikana, Steven Junior, and one unidentified male.

Chipyola said the accident involved a Mitsubishi Canter, registration number KK 9912, driven by 39-year-old Moses Mvula, which was traveling towards Karonga carrying bags of beans along with about ten passengers on the cargo section.

Upon reaching the Tenenthe slopes, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which hit a road embankment before overturning.

The four victims were pronounced dead upon arrival at Karonga District Hospital due to severe head and internal injuries. The driver and other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the same facility.

Police have since urged motorists to exercise caution, especially when driving on steep and dangerous road sections.
