Police in Malawi’s South Eastern Region have stepped up security operations following a wave of violent crimes targeting motorcycle taxi (Kabaza) operators in recent weeks.
Deputy Public Relations Officer Modesta Kayange said officers are actively responding to the incidents and have called for stronger public cooperation through timely information sharing to help identify and arrest suspects.
Kayange has also advised Kabaza operators to prioritise their safety by avoiding lone trips, limiting night movements, and staying away from isolated areas.
Security expert Sherif Kaisi stressed the need for heightened personal vigilance, urging operators to make informed decisions, especially in high-risk environments.
Meanwhile, William Chiwale, Secretary General of the Motorbikes and Bicycle Owners Association of Malawi, said the association is working closely with police to equip members with basic self-protection skills and reinforce safety guidelines.
He described the attacks as deeply concerning, noting that many operators rely on the business for their livelihoods, and called for urgent intervention.
Recent cases include the killing of Amon Mukhula (19) in Thyolo and Philemon Ziyaya (28) in Lilongwe. Police have since confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the incidents as investigations continue.
