Man Arrested in Nkhata Bay Over K2.6 Million Shop Break-In

Police in Nkhata Bay have arrested 38-year-old Mackson Nyirongo for allegedly breaking into a shop and stealing assorted groceries worth K2.6 million at Kakumbi area in the district.
In an interview Thursday, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Nkhata Bay Police Devoter Mithi said the suspect committed the offence during the night of May 19 and 20, 2026.
“It is allegedly that the shop owner had locked the premises in the evening, but upon opening the following morning, discovered a hole at one corner of the shop and several items missing, including sugar, Azam soap, washing powder and Protex soap” she said.
She added that the matter was reported to Nkhata Bay Police Station, where detectives launched investigations that led to the arrest of the suspect on May 21, 2026, and that
Police also managed to recover some of the stolen items.
Nyirongo, who comes from Kachipapa Village in the area of Senior Chief Mankhambira in Nkhata Bay District, is expected to appear before court soon after completion of investigations.
