Anne Mumba, the woman convicted of murdering her husband, Peter Mumba, has died at the age of 56.
Mumba reportedly died yesterday at a clinic in Lilongwe. Her sister, Beat Kasakatira, said she had been suffering from asthma.
Burial is expected to take place tomorrow at Area 18 Cemetery.
The High Court sentenced Anne Mumba to 53 years imprisonment in October 2024 after finding her guilty of killing her husband in April 2020.
Court proceedings heard that Professor Mumba died from acute poisoning and that his wife delayed taking him to hospital. She was later arrested in August 2020.
In November 2024, Anne Mumba appealed against both the conviction and sentence, arguing there was no evidence proving she administered the poison and that the exact poison involved was never identified.
The Supreme Court of Appeal granted her bail pending appeal on January 13, 2026.
However, she has now died before the appeal process could be concluded.
