Bwaila Hospital Worker Arrested Over Alleged Theft of Medical Drugs

Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 55-year-old Orthopedic Assistant at Bwaila District Hospital, Thomson Banda, for allegedly stealing medical drugs and surgical equipment from the health facility.
Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu said officers also arrested a vendor identified as Sudala Mdazika, aged 51, who was allegedly found in possession of the stolen items after reportedly buying them from the hospital worker.
According to Chigalu, the recovered items include 20 sodium chloride intravenous infusions, five povidone iodine topical solutions, 11 ceftriaxone sodium injections BP, and 100 disposable syringes suspected to have been stolen from the hospital.
Police say Mdazika was first arrested on May 25, 2026 after being intercepted while allegedly attempting to leave the hospital premises carrying a bag containing the medical supplies.
Investigators later arrested Banda following joint operations between police officers and hospital security personnel.
The two suspects are expected to appear before court soon on charges related to possession of medical drugs without a permit and possession of property suspected to have been stolen.
