2 Ex-Convicts Arrested with Loaded Pistol in Lilongwe; Manhunt Launched for Third Suspect

Lilongwe Police have arrested two habitual criminals after finding them in possession of a loaded pistol during a routine patrol in Bwalolanjovu, Lilongwe.
The suspects, identified as Steven Kanongola Kambwiri, 54, and Phillip Lazaro, 51, were intercepted around 12:00 noon on May 26 while travelling in a Suzuki Swift.
A search of the vehicle uncovered a pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
A third suspect, Jack Semu Kapilikitsa, fled the scene in the vehicle and remains at large. Police have launched a manhunt for him.
“Kambwiri and Kapilikitsa are currently on court bail granted by the Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court for a robbery case,” said Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer.
In the February 26, 2026 robbery in Area 9, Lilongwe, Kambwiri, Kapilikitsa, and two accomplices allegedly attacked an Indian national who was riding a motorcycle from his business.
Armed with panga knives, the group stabbed the victim, deflated his motorcycle tyres to prevent pursuit, and stole a laptop bag containing a passport, bank documents, and cash.
Their getaway vehicle, a Demio registration BW 346, overturned near Lingadzi Inn during the escape.
Kambwiri comes from Mkhona Village, T/A Kachere in Dedza, while Lazaro hails from Khwangwala Village, T/A Kwataine in Ntcheu District.
Both arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of being found in possession of a pistol without a permit.
