A 23-year-old man, Chris Nyenje, has died at Mpilipili Trading Centre in Mangochi District following the alleged excessive consumption of distilled spirit, commonly known as kachasu, on an empty stomach.

According to police reports, Nyenje, who was known to be a habitual drinker, was last seen at his home on Sunday before disappearing. His body was discovered the following day near a drinking joint at Mpilipili Trading Centre.

Makanjira Police spokesperson Mike Kamanga said detectives and medical personnel from a nearby health facility rushed to the scene to investigate the incident.

A postmortem examination later established that Nyenje died from hypoglycemia secondary to high alcohol intake.

The deceased hailed from Makanjira Village under Traditional Authority Makanjira in Mangochi District.

Meanwhile, police have advised members of the public to ensure they eat adequately before consuming alcohol to avoid similar tragedies.
