A 35-year-old man, Eliya Mtonyo, has been found dead after allegedly hanging himself in Monkey Bay.
Monkey Bay Police Station spokesperson Kondwani James confirmed the incident, saying the deceased was living alone after a divorce several months ago and was last seen heading to a nearby drinking place yesterday.
“During the early hours of June 10, a passerby discovered him hanging from a tree and reported the matter to Cape Maclear Police Unit,” said James.
He said police officers visited the scene in Muonda village and later took the body to Cape Maclear Health Centre, where a postmortem examination established that death was due to suffocation secondary to strangulation, consistent with hanging.
The police publicist has since urged people facing personal challenges to seek support from trusted relatives, friends or Police Victim Support Unit.
Mtonyo hailed from Juwaye Village, Traditional Authority Nankumba in Mangochi District.
