The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is investigating 44 employees suspected of engaging in corrupt practices.
MRA Ethics and Prevention Manager Desire Kassam said the institution requires all employees to declare any cash, gifts, or shopping vouchers received from members of the public while on duty.
She noted that some officers failed to comply with the policy, prompting investigations. Kassam revealed that during the 2025/2026 financial year, MRA officers declared 173 gifts, K2.2 million in cash, and several shopping vouchers.
She said all the declared items and money were subsequently donated in line with the authority’s integrity guidelines.
Kassam made the remarks when officials from the Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA) visited MRA offices in Blantyre to learn about its integrity management systems.
CIRA Financial Specialist Philip Munthali urged other government institutions to adopt similar policies to strengthen accountability and transparency.
