Police in Mulanje have launched a manhunt for unknown suspects following the killing of 28-year-old George Bomani, who was allegedly attacked after being accused of being a thief.

The incident occurred on June 24 at Chefati Village under Senior Chief Nthiramanja in Mulanje District. According to police, Bomani had visited his girlfriend when he allegedly found another man at her house and reportedly hid in the kitchen.

He was later spotted by villagers and fled the scene after realizing they were pursuing him. As the chase continued, more people joined in after he was accused of being a thief before he was eventually caught and severely assaulted.

Bomani was later taken to his home village of Chiwaya, but his body was returned to Chefati Village following his death, with some houses reportedly damaged during the ensuing unrest.

A postmortem conducted at Mulanje District Hospital established that he died from excessive blood loss caused by multiple head injuries.

Police say investigations are underway and efforts to arrest those responsible for the killing are continuing.
