The University of Malawi (UNIMA) has been ranked the top university in Malawi in the 2026 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, further strengthening its position among the country’s leading higher education institutions.

The latest recognition comes just weeks after the Centre for World University Rankings also placed UNIMA as Malawi’s highest-ranked university, marking the second major international ranking this month to recognize the institution.

UNIMA Vice-Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu described the achievement as a significant milestone, saying it reflects the university’s commitment to delivering quality higher education and reinforces its standing as Malawi’s leading institution of higher learning.

Last year, the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) was ranked Malawi’s top university in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings after UNIMA did not participate in the assessment.

This year’s rankings featured four public universities from Malawi: UNIMA, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), and LUANAR.
