A 39-year-old man has died after a mining pit collapsed while he was allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities at Nyuwani Village under Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje District.

The deceased has been identified as Lucius Laelo.

Nsanje Police Station spokesperson Jabulani Ng’oma said the incident occurred at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to Ng’oma, community members who were nearby rushed to rescue Laelo and pulled him from the collapsed pit, but he was already unconscious.

Police officers from Chiromo Police Post visited the scene before taking the victim to Kalemba Community Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.
