Illegal Miner Killed After Pit Collapses in Nsanje

An illegal miner has died after a mining pit collapsed on him while he was digging an underground tunnel at Nyuwani Village under Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje District.
Nsanje Police spokesperson Jabulani Ng’oma identified the deceased as Lucius Laelo.
According to Ng’oma, the incident occurred when the underground tunnel Laelo was excavating suddenly caved in, trapping him beneath the debris.
He was rushed to Kalemba Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead.
The tragedy adds to a growing number of fatal accidents linked to illegal mining activities in Nsanje District, where several people have lost their lives in recent years after mining pits collapsed.
Despite the repeated incidents, concerns remain over the continued practice of illegal mining and the lack of effective measures to curb the dangerous activity.
