The Medical Doctors Union of Malawi (MDUM) has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Dr. Atughanile Chomo, a medical doctor who was serving at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.
Dr. Chomo was reportedly found dead on Tuesday morning at her residence in Mount Pleasant, Blantyre. Police have confirmed the death but say investigations are ongoing, with an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the incident expected once inquiries are complete.
Speaking to Mibawa Television, MDUM Publicity Secretary Dr. Steve Mlangiza described the loss as a major blow to Malawi’s healthcare system.
“We have lost a colleague who made the work of caring for patients a little lighter. We already have very few medical doctors in the country, and losing one leaves a huge gap in our service delivery,” said Mlangiza.
He remembered Dr. Chomo as a dedicated and compassionate medical practitioner who was deeply committed to her patients.
