The Nsanje Second Grade Magistrate’s Court has fined seven people after convicting them of publishing false news likely to cause public alarm over alleged cases of manhood disappearances.

Delivering the sentence, Second Grade Magistrate Haneef Ngundende said the convicts falsely claimed that their genitals had disappeared in separate incidents without any medical evidence to support their allegations.

The court ordered Clement Thede and Bonface Beka to each pay a fine of K600,000 or, in default, serve two years’ imprisonment.

Shadrick Sande was ordered to pay K500,000 or serve one year and six months in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

Meanwhile, Owen Chandendema, Yotamu Ephraim, Jeremiah Yesaya, and Nelson Andiseni were each fined K400,000 or, in default, will serve one year and six months’ imprisonment.

The court ruled that the false claims had the potential to cause unnecessary fear and panic among members of the public.
