A Mchinji court has sentenced a 43-year-old Disease Control Surveillance Assistant to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour for defrauding a Village Savings and Loan (VSL) group of more than K12 million.

The convict, Silia Shatie, was found guilty of fraud after collecting money from the group and its customers but failing to remit the funds.

The court heard that Shatie later fled to Kanjuchi in Mzimba, where he allegedly went into hiding. He was eventually arrested and brought before the court.

Senior Grade Magistrate Mercy Lukongolo also ordered Shatie to pay K12.75 million in compensation and costs. If he fails to pay, he will serve the two-year prison sentence with hard labour.
