Kanengo Police have arrested five men and recovered 61 bags of cement worth K2,409,500 following an alleged theft and fraud case reported at Nsungwi in Lilongwe.

According to Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer Macfarlen Mseteka, the suspects allegedly tricked a shop owner into releasing the cement after one of them falsely claimed to have secured a government primary school construction contract.

The suspect reportedly promised that payment would be made through a bank transaction.

After the cement was delivered, the suspect disappeared without making the payment, prompting the shop owner to report the matter to police.

Mseteka said investigations led to the arrest of all five suspects and the recovery of the stolen cement, which had already been sold in Nsundwe.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of theft, fraud, and receiving property suspected to have been stolen.
