Jamaican Reggae Star Fantan Mojah Dies at 49

Jamaican roots reggae artist Fantan Mojah has died at the age of 49 following complications from a heart condition.

Born Owen Lennox Moncrieffe, the reggae star passed away on 14 July at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, just weeks before his 50th birthday.

According to people close to the musician, Fantan Mojah had been battling a heart condition for some time before his death.

Born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, Fantan Mojah rose to international prominence in the early 2000s with his conscious roots reggae music. A devoted member of the Bobo Ashanti faith, he became known for songs that promoted spirituality, African identity, social justice and unity.

He is best remembered for hit songs including “Rasta Got Soul” and “Kingston Town,” which earned him a loyal fan base across the world.

Fantan Mojah also performed in Malawi during one of his African tours, where he was warmly received by reggae fans. His performance left a lasting impression on many Malawians who admired his message of faith, resilience and African pride.

Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, fellow musicians and the global reggae community, who have described him as a powerful voice for conscious reggae music and Rastafarian culture.
