Police Investigate Death of 23-Year-Old UNIMA Assistant Lecturer in Zomba

Police in Zomba have launched an investigation into the death of 23-year-old Mary Hamba Nyirenda, an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Malawi (UNIMA).
Nyirenda was found dead at her residence in Zakazaka Location, opposite Likangala Secondary School, on the evening of 19 July 2026.
The incident was confirmed by Zomba Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Constable Andrew Mwale.
Details surrounding the circumstances of her death remain unclear, as police investigations are ongoing.
Following the news, several students expressed their grief and concern on social media, with many referring to the incident as an apparent suicide and encouraging people to talk about their struggles and seek support whenever they feel overwhelmed by emotional or psychological challenges.
