Man Dies After Allegedly Drinking Excessive Kachasu on Empty Stomach in Chitipa

A 54-year-old man has died in Chitipa after allegedly consuming excessive amounts of the locally distilled beer, kachasu, on an empty stomach, police have confirmed.
Chitipa Police Public Relations Officer Rabson Mkandawire identified the deceased as Batison Simbeye of Njerengwa Village under Senior Chief Mwaulambya.
Mkandawire said Simbeye left home for a drinking spree on July 20, 2026, but failed to return. His body was discovered the following day near the Mwachihomba River by members of the community, who alerted police.
A post-mortem examination conducted at Chitipa District Hospital concluded that Simbeye died from acute alcohol intoxication after consuming excessive amounts of alcohol on an empty stomach, according to police.
Following the incident, police have urged the public to exercise caution when consuming alcohol, warning that excessive drinking—particularly on an empty stomach—can have fatal consequences.
