A 23-year-old man, Wilson Nkhata, has died after a gold mine collapsed in Nkhwambala Village under Traditional Authority Chitathamapiri in Kasungu District.
Kasungu Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Miracle Hauli confirmed the incident, saying it occurred on Monday while Nkhata was mining for gold.
Hauli said Nkhata sustained severe head injuries and lost a significant amount of blood after the mine collapsed.
A local resident, Usuman Chitonde, said Nkhata’s body has been taken to Nkhulande Village under Traditional Authority Mnyanja in Kasungu, where he hailed from.
Last year, more than eight people died in Kasungu following two separate mine collapse incidents.
