The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has called on the government to clarify the nature of the relationship between the country’s leader, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, and his deputy, Dr. Jane Ansah.
In a statement, the coalition said recent developments in the country are raising more questions than answers.
HRDC said the situation projects a negative image and has fuelled public debate over the relationship between the two leaders, amid perceptions that Dr. Ansah is being sidelined.
The concerns intensified after Enoch Chihana, another deputy to the country’s leader, chaired a Cabinet meeting in Lilongwe while Professor Mutharika was in Blantyre.
However, Chief Secretary to the Government Dr. Justin Saidi recently said there is nothing unusual about the country’s leader choosing whoever he wishes to represent him at official events.
