BLANTYRE ERUPTS AFTER ANNOUNCEMENT OF MUTHARIKA’S VICTORY

The city of Blantyre erupted this morning when the Malawi Electoral Commission made its initial announcement that the DPP leader had won the May polls.

Soon after the announcement that Mutharika had come first there was jubilation across the townships of Blantyre with people beating pails, blowing vuvuzelas and shouting.

Most of the people sang some of the DPP songs that were being used on the campaign trail by the winning party while others flashed the thumb that is a symbol of the DPP.

This morning our reporter as well observed that the mood was yet to lift in the commercial city as cars blared horns while flashing the thumb to celebrate the DPP victory.

The DPP has bounced back into power after it lost it following the death of its founder, Bingu wa Mutharika in 2012.
