The remarks made by the Minister of Justice Samuel Tembenu which if enforced might be deemed as a threat to the right to expression of Malawians have been cautioned.
Last week, the minister of justice warned that the Malawi government would be monitoring comments made on the social media to see if anybody is talking ill of the government or individuals.
However, the remarks have not been welcomed by the majority of Malawians writing on social media who have labeled it as an attempt by the DPP led government meant at stifling people’s freedom of expression.
Known for its heavy handedness on free speech the DPP led government had earlier empowered a minister to ban a publication without being answerable to any person.
The remarks made by the Justice Minister have therefore reminded Malawians of the earlier proposals by the same DPP government to stifle the media.
