COURT ORDERS MEC TO HOLD FRESH ELECTIONS IN LILONGWE CITY SOUTH EAST CONSTITUENCY

High Court in Lilongwe on Tuesday 28, 2014 ordered the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to conduct fresh elections in Lilongwe City South East constituency after Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Candidate Ulemu Msungama seeked court redress on the matter.

MEC declared Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Bentry Namasasu a winner of the seat despite several irregularities that locked the elections.

The development did not please Msungama who asked for Court to ask MEC to do re-count which was granted.
Barely hours before the re-count MEC Warehouse which was keeping the disputed votes was gutted down by fire which its cause is yet to be known until today.

Making its determination today, High Court Ivy Kamanga asked the electoral body, MEC, to conduct a rerun in the constituency soon to accord Lilongwe City South East constituents opportunity to have a representative of their choice in parliament.

This means that Namasasu who was declared winner by MEC has lost his seat.
