Teachers threaten national wide strike over unpaid allowances

Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has threatens to call for teachers national wide strike over failure by Malawi National Examination Board (MANEB) to pay invigilators and Supervisors assigned to administer the just released Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations.

TUM’s General Secretary Denis Kalekeni sounded the warning in a letter addressed to Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST) seen by FaceofMalawi reporter.

According to the letter, TUM is furious with the Ministry’s delay to release money amounting to MK700 million for the Supervisors and Invigilators especially from the North and Central region despite an assurance recently.

Kalekeni said the strike is scheduled for Tuesday and teachers will resume teaching once their demands are met by government.

Recently teachers also staged a national wide strike over unpaid arrears and government’s failure to promote some teachers.

The strike forced Primary school learners to stage violent protest in the capital Lilongwe, demanding government to intervene on the strike.
