Ugly scenes at Lilongwe Mayoral polls: DPP officials beat up newspaper photographer after losing the seat

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials on Thursday beat up a newspaper photographer and other people in the capital Lilongwe after the Party lost mayoral elections.

The DPP officials led by its Acting Publicity Secretary Francis Mphepo went further by smashing a vehicle belonging to one of its Councillor, accusing him of betraying the party in the polls.

As this was not enough, one of the DPP’s to official was seen spitting on the face of the said Councillor in full view of the Police officer.

This was happening at a time Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials were celebrating win by its candidate Desmond Bikoko.

Bikoko outclassed DPP candidate, Kwame Bandawe by a vote, he won 14 votes out of the 15 valid votes cast.

When contacted for comments on the matter, DPP Spokesperson Francis Kasaila said he was not aware of the development.

Kasaila referred this reporter to Mphepo.

Meanwhile analysts have described the action demonstrated by DPP officials at the polls as regrettable.
