NGO lobby for increased women candidates in 2014 Elections

As 2014 tripartite elections draw closer, the Association for Progressive Women in Malawi has said it is lobbying to have more women candidates during the elections.

Rumphi district coordinator, Mr. Abel Chimaliro said only 4 women registered during the 2009 election but all of them failed due to inadequate resources to run their campaigns.

“We are seeking to have 50 per cent of women representatives in parliament come 2014. We are supporting and encouraging women to take part in the election of the 50-50 campaign to bear fruits,” said Mr. Chimaliro.

He said so far only 29 women are aspiring to contest in local government polls and three have shown interest to contest in the parliamentary election.

Mr. Chimaliro said as the organisation seeks to strengthen women participation in decision making positions hence will assist women contesters with resources for campaign.

In 2014, Malawi is expected to have its first ever tripartite elections where President will be elected along parliamentarians and councilors.
