Government accountant jailed for corruption

Lilongwe Magistrate Court has found guilty and sentenced to four years imprisonment with hard labour Principal government accountant,Howard Njewa to four years imprisonment with hard labour, for being involved in corruption practices.

The Court has also sentenced Njewa’s accomplice, Brian Bandawe, also to four years imprisonment with hard labour for persuading a public officer to abuse his office at the ministry of Economic Planning and Development.

According to the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB), Njewa was accused of profiting from a contract which he assisted Bandawe to win at the ministry where he was the project accountant.

The ACB instituted an investigation where it established that Njewa assured his friend to secure a contract at the ministry of Economic Planning and development where he was the project accountant with intent to profit from the contract”, said Egritta Ndala in a statement issued to the media.

The sentencing of the two has come hot on the heels of the Cashgate scandal which appears to leave the nation in a conundrum as they are failing to make heads or tails out of it.
