Tobacco farmers in Kasungu District have written to President Peter Mutharika to consider having Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Bruce Munthali removed from his position.
The concerned citizens cited the CEO with incompetence and failure the TCC body to control tobacco sales which they described as ‘undesirable’ in this year’s selling season.
The 3-paged epistle signed by 20 farmers who claim to represent a thousand more others, said that the TCC seems not to care of the obstacles that they face to have the crop managed.
According to leader of the farmers, John Gwesere, Dr. Munthali has not helped them in the current season citing that they have made a lot of losses.
He added that the letter has explained how the farmers wish the sales should be done, as well as how the TCC has failed them.
President Muthalika is yet to scrutinize the letter which according to Gwesere has no ultimatums.
In this year’s tobacco selling season, Malawi acquired money amounting up to $358 Million since it began in June.
In July last year, Malawi’s tobacco revenue jumped by $22.97 million to $257.57 million in week 16, to reach about 85 percent of this season’s target of $300 million, according to figures from the Auction Holdings Limited (AHL).
