Two women arrested for mocking a 13-year old albino girl

Kawale Police on Monday, May 22 2016 arrested two women suspected of inhumanely mocking a 13 year-old girl with albinism, Lilian Tongani in Kaliyeka in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula identified the two suspects as Olivia Mangani, 26, from Mtiya village, TA Mulumbe and Beatrice Chintondo, 35, from Mkando village, from the same area in Zomba district.

On March 26 2016, Kawale Police also arrested Lucius Mantha 21 from Ndaona village, (TA) Nsabwe in Thyolo district for verbally attacking Robert Banda, 30, a person with albinism.

The suspects have been charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace contrary to section 181 of the penal code.

In recent months, there have been growing fears among persons with albinism due to the increase of cases of abductions and killings of people with the condition especially in Machinga, Zomba, Blantyre, Dedza and Mulanje.

Lilongwe Police are warning members of the general public that the law shall take its course on any person issuing inhumane threats towards persons with albinism.
