NRC protests update: Zodiak TV crew harassed by Police

A video has gone viral on the social media both on WhatsApp and Facebook showing police in the capital Lilongwe harassing the Zodiak TV crew during the protest staged by Natural Resources College students, a constituent college of the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) on Wednesday in the capital Lilongwe.

In the video, unknown Police officers is seen pointing a gun at Zodiak TV cameraman covering the demonstrations before firing a teargas canister.

The development comes barely months after Police officers in Zomba were caught in video harassing Chancellor College (CHANCO) female students during the anti-fee hike demonstrations.

When contacted to comment on the video, Inspector General of Police Lexen Kachama has apologised to Zodiak.

Kachama said this was unacceptable, saying the police should know the role of the media in such situations.

Meanwhile Police are yet to release the 26 NRC students arrested during the protest.

The students were against the 45 percent fee hike effected by LUANAR council as announced on Monday September 19 2016.
