MCP Commits in Promoting Peaceful Elections

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has made a commitment to promote peace before, during and after the May 21 Tripartite Elections.

The promise was made when the party’s President Lazarus Chakwera and secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka signed a peace accord after meeting Public Affairs Committee (PAC) officials in Lilongwe.

In his remarks Mkaka said PAC is concerned with the continued political violence that are happening in the country.

“PAC is concerned with the continued tendency of perpetuating violence and we were engaged to make sure that the cases do not escalate,” Mkaka said.

He further added that the peace accord will help to minimize the political violence that are perpetrating in the country.

“It is a preventive measure because we were looking at what could be done to make sure that the campaign is peaceful and after the elections,” Mkaka said.

The committee’s spokesperson, Fr. Peter Mulomole, recently said the committee believed that committing stakeholders to signing the peace accord would minimize cases of conflict that could affect the electoral process.
