Mzuni Student Dies in A Hit and Run Car Accident

A second year Mzuzu University (Mzuni) student, Dyton Mike Nakhuto, has died in hit-and-run road accident that occurred in the wee hours of Saturday.

Nakhuto, who was also working as a police officer at Zomba police dispensary, died on the spot after sustaining head injuries.

Mzuzu Police Spokesperson, Edith Kachotsa, has confirmed the development saying the police have since identified the vehicle and arrested the driver.

Kachotsa said the driver, Fiskan Shaba, 40, of Elia Shaba Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chindi in Mzimba was arrested as he was trying to fix the car at one of the garages in Mzuzu.

“It was a hit and run accident that occurred at Mzuni campus along Mzuzu to Ekwendeni M1 Road. The vehicle Toyota Hilux double cabin registration number MC 9626 belonging to the Central Medical Stores was coming from Mzuzu City direction heading towards Ekwendeni direction. Upon arrival at Mzuni at around 2 am, he hit a male pedestrian identified as Mike Nakhuto who was walking on the nearside dirty verge heading the same direction. He sustained head injury and died on the spot.

“Working on a tip that the vehicle was at one the garage for fixing, we managed to impound it and arrest the driver. He will appear in court soon to answer the charge of causing death by careless driving contrary to section 216 of Road Traffic Act,” said Kachotsa.

Meanwhile, Mzuni Students Representative Council (MUSREC) Speaker, Cosmas Mbewe, has reiterated calls for divine intervention saying they are living in fear as they don’t know what will happen next.

“This one [Nakhuto] is the sixth person we have lost this semester alone. It is a scare stuation now because we don’t know who is going to die next. We still plead with the management to organise special prayers that would help cleanse the place,” said Mbewe.

Mzuni also lost Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Fred Msiska on Monday January 6, 2020 and he was laid at his Khwawa Village in Karonga District.

Dyton Mike Nakhuto who was an upgrading Optometry student, has been buried on Sunday at his home village Kaiche in the area of Traditional Authority Nankumba in Mangochi.
