World netball MALAWI vs BARBADOS | Malawi 73 – 44 Barbados MATCH REPORT:

Mwayi Kumwenda

In the third match of the day Malawi seemed to have the edge throughout, eventually coming out on top with a final score of 73 goals to opponent Barbados’s 44.

With enthusiastic support on the clappers from a Singaporean school in the stands, both teams were poised for what should, on paper, have been a closely contested match, however from the outset Malawi, used their slight height advantage over Barbados to triumph. Accurate shooting from both teams meant that defensive rebounds were few, but World number seven, Malawi, continued to dominate using skill and tight passes around the circle.

In the second half of the game, the Barbados Centre, Sabreena Smith, was able to throw some long effective passes into the circle, which meant the excited crowd witnessed strong shooting from Goal Shooter, Lydia Bishop, with equally effective split stepping by Malawi’s counterpart, Mwayi Kumwenda, who used her long limbs to great effect.

Barbados’s defense fought back in the last quarter, however the strength in combination of the Malawi shooters, meant it was difficult for the Caribbean team to make their mark. Barbados, ranked only two places behind their opponents, found it difficult to create space on court due to the heavy man on man marking by the Malawi players who were ready to pounce on any interception.

Malawi dominated throughout, using their strength and skill to angle the ball through each channel of the court.
