High Court adjourns 3rd party cheque encashment case

The High Court in Lilongwe has adjourned indefinitely a case in which Malawi Law Society MLS is challenging suspension of all third party cheques by local banks.

MLS lawyer in the case John Suzi Banda told Face of Malawi that the presiding judge made the decision after lawyers representing Bankers Association of Malawi BAM said will challenge MLS injunction on the matter.

BAM seeks to suspend encashment of all third party cheques as a measure to curb fraud.

The move was backed by the Reserve Bank of Malawi but the Lawyers’ body argues it’s illegal
