A man in Chikwawa has been slapped with a five year prison sentence after he broke into a house and made away with house hold items.
Chikwawa police station public relations officer, Foster Benjamin said Mphatso Chitungu was convicted on Tuesday over an offence of burglary and theft.
Police Prosecutor Sub Inspector Danford Otala told the court that Chitungu is said to have hit Presscane Limited official Linda Mfune’s house on the night of 5 November this year.
“He went away with assorted items which, among others, include mattresses, mini cooker, and bed valued over K716,000,” explained Otala.
Otala added that the convict was netted a few days later while hitting another house in a broad daylight.
A charge of housebreaking is still facing Chitungu.
In a burglary and theft case, Chitungu was found guilty as charged.
The state pleaded with the court to hand him a harsh penalty.
In his judgement, Second Grade Magistrate Joram Zebron concurred with the state’s earlier submission that sought a length custodial sentence on the accused.
The magistrate went ahead cracking a 5-year jail term on Chitungu who hails from Chisupe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba District.
